Description

Crispy and flavorful mini blooming onions made in the air fryer, offering a lighter version of the classic appetizer with a crunchy coating and tender inside.


Ingredients

  • 6 small sweet onions (peeled)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 1/2 cups breadcrumbs (panko preferred)
  • Cooking spray

Instructions

  1. Peel the onions and trim the tops slightly. Cut each onion into quarters or eighths without cutting through the base.
  2. Gently separate the layers to create a blooming effect.
  3. In one bowl, mix flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, salt, and pepper.
  4. In a second bowl, whisk eggs and milk together.
  5. Place breadcrumbs in a third bowl.
  6. Coat each onion in the flour mixture, ensuring it gets between the layers.
  7. Dip into the egg mixture, then coat with breadcrumbs, pressing gently to adhere.
  8. Preheat the air fryer to 180°C (350°F).
  9. Lightly spray onions with cooking spray and place in the air fryer basket without overcrowding.
  10. Cook for 12–15 minutes until golden brown and crispy, spraying more oil halfway if needed.
