Description
Crispy and flavorful mini blooming onions made in the air fryer, offering a lighter version of the classic appetizer with a crunchy coating and tender inside.
Ingredients
- 6 small sweet onions (peeled)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 1/2 cups breadcrumbs (panko preferred)
- Cooking spray
Instructions
- Peel the onions and trim the tops slightly. Cut each onion into quarters or eighths without cutting through the base.
- Gently separate the layers to create a blooming effect.
- In one bowl, mix flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, salt, and pepper.
- In a second bowl, whisk eggs and milk together.
- Place breadcrumbs in a third bowl.
- Coat each onion in the flour mixture, ensuring it gets between the layers.
- Dip into the egg mixture, then coat with breadcrumbs, pressing gently to adhere.
- Preheat the air fryer to 180°C (350°F).
- Lightly spray onions with cooking spray and place in the air fryer basket without overcrowding.
- Cook for 12–15 minutes until golden brown and crispy, spraying more oil halfway if needed.
Notes
- Use panko breadcrumbs for extra crispiness.
- Avoid overcrowding the air fryer for even cooking.
- Add parmesan to breadcrumbs for a cheesy twist.
- Adjust cayenne for desired spice level.
- Best reheated in air fryer to maintain crisp texture.
