Ingredients
- 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
- 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F)
- 1 tbsp granulated sugar (for yeast)
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/4 cup baking soda (for water bath)
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar (for coating)
- 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
Instructions
- In a large bowl, dissolve active dry yeast and 1 tablespoon of sugar in warm water. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
- Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture and mix until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5–7 minutes until smooth.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Divide the dough into 8 pieces. Roll each piece into a rope and shape into pretzels.
- In a large pot, bring 6 cups of water and 1/4 cup baking soda to a boil. Dip each pretzel in the bath for 20 seconds, then transfer to the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake for 12–15 minutes or until golden brown.
- While still warm, brush pretzels with melted butter and toss in a mixture of cinnamon and sugar.
Notes
- You can make the dough ahead and refrigerate overnight.
- To reheat, bake in a 300°F oven for 5–7 minutes.
- Brush with fresh butter and sugar after reheating for best flavor.
- Try adding a cream cheese filling or a vanilla glaze for extra indulgence.
