Description

Cornbread dressing is a classic Southern comfort food made with crumbled cornbread, sautéed vegetables, herbs, and savory broth. Moist, flavorful, and perfect for holidays or a comforting side dish.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups cornbread, crumbled (preferably day-old)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 stalks celery, finely chopped
  • 2 cups chicken or turkey broth
  • 2 large eggs
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon fresh or dried sage
  • 1 teaspoon fresh or dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat and sauté onions and celery until tender.
  3. In a large bowl, combine crumbled cornbread, sautéed vegetables, herbs, salt, and pepper.
  4. Beat the eggs and mix them into the cornbread mixture.
  5. Gradually pour in the broth, stirring until the mixture is moist but not soupy.
  6. Transfer the mixture to a greased baking dish.
  7. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes or until the top is golden and slightly crisp.

Notes

  • Use day-old cornbread for better texture.
  • Customize with sausage, mushrooms, or boiled eggs.
  • Vegetable broth can be substituted for a vegetarian version.
  • Can be assembled ahead of time and baked before serving.
  • Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 4 days.
