Description

A rich and comforting self-saucing chocolate dessert that bakes into a soft cake on top with a velvety chocolate pudding layer underneath.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/4 cups hot water

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and lightly grease a baking dish.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, 3/4 cup granulated sugar, 1/4 cup cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Stir in the milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract until a smooth batter forms.
  4. Spread the batter evenly into the prepared baking dish.
  5. In another bowl, mix together 1/2 cup granulated sugar, brown sugar, and 1/4 cup cocoa powder for the topping.
  6. Sprinkle the topping mixture evenly over the batter without stirring.
  7. Carefully pour the hot water over the entire mixture. Do not stir.
  8. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, until the top is set but still soft.
  9. Let cool slightly before serving so the sauce thickens a bit.

Notes

  • Add a handful of chocolate chips to the batter for extra richness.
  • Replace part of the hot water with strong brewed coffee for deeper flavor.
  • Add a pinch of cinnamon or espresso powder to enhance the chocolate taste.
  • Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat in the microwave in short intervals until warm.
  • Add a splash of milk before reheating to keep the sauce smooth.
  • Best served warm, fresh from the oven.
