Description
A simple and comforting Southern-style sautéed cabbage with onions, lightly caramelized and packed with flavor, perfect as a quick and budget-friendly side dish.
Ingredients
- 1 medium green cabbage, chopped (about 6–8 cups)
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 3 tablespoons olive oil or butter
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
- 2 tablespoons water or chicken broth
Instructions
- Remove outer leaves of the cabbage and chop into bite-sized pieces. Thinly slice the onion.
- Heat olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add sliced onions and cook for 3–4 minutes until softened.
- Stir in minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Add chopped cabbage to the skillet.
- Season with salt, black pepper, paprika, and red pepper flakes. Toss to coat evenly.
- Pour in water or chicken broth, cover, and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Remove lid and sauté for another 5–7 minutes until slightly caramelized.
- Add apple cider vinegar, stir well, and serve warm.
Notes
- Smoked turkey sausage can make it a more filling dish.
- Use soy sauce or smoked paprika for extra depth in a vegetarian version.
- Add carrots or bell peppers for sweetness and color.
- Increase red pepper flakes or add hot sauce for more heat.
- Reheat on stovetop for best texture.
