Description

A simple and comforting Southern-style sautéed cabbage with onions, lightly caramelized and packed with flavor, perfect as a quick and budget-friendly side dish.

Ingredients

  • 1 medium green cabbage, chopped (about 68 cups)
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil or butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons water or chicken broth

Instructions

  1. Remove outer leaves of the cabbage and chop into bite-sized pieces. Thinly slice the onion.
  2. Heat olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  3. Add sliced onions and cook for 3–4 minutes until softened.
  4. Stir in minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  5. Add chopped cabbage to the skillet.
  6. Season with salt, black pepper, paprika, and red pepper flakes. Toss to coat evenly.
  7. Pour in water or chicken broth, cover, and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  8. Remove lid and sauté for another 5–7 minutes until slightly caramelized.
  9. Add apple cider vinegar, stir well, and serve warm.

Notes

  • Smoked turkey sausage can make it a more filling dish.
  • Use soy sauce or smoked paprika for extra depth in a vegetarian version.
  • Add carrots or bell peppers for sweetness and color.
  • Increase red pepper flakes or add hot sauce for more heat.
  • Reheat on stovetop for best texture.
