Description
A hearty and comforting Salisbury steak recipe featuring seasoned ground beef patties smothered in a rich mushroom and onion gravy—perfect for a cozy dinner.
Ingredients
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- ⅓ cup panko breadcrumbs
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 garlic clove, finely minced
- 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil (if needed)
- ½ onion, diced
- 8 ounces sliced mushrooms
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1½ cups beef stock or broth
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, panko breadcrumbs, Italian seasoning, egg, ketchup, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, minced garlic, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined and form into 4 oval patties.
- Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patties until golden brown on each side, about 4–5 minutes per side. Remove and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add onion and cook until translucent, about 3–4 minutes. Add mushrooms and cook until golden, about 3–5 minutes. Add butter and stir until melted.
- Sprinkle in flour, whisk to combine, then slowly add beef stock while whisking. Stir in ketchup and Worcestershire sauce, and season with salt and pepper.
- Return steaks to skillet and spoon gravy over them. Cover and simmer for 5 minutes, or until steaks are cooked through and gravy thickens.
- If gravy is too thick, add more beef stock or water. If too thin, stir in a cornstarch slurry and simmer until thickened.
Notes
- Use a meat thermometer to ensure steaks reach 160°F (71°C).
- Omit mushrooms if preferred—gravy remains flavorful with onions alone.
- Ground turkey or chicken can be substituted for beef.
- To make ahead, store steaks and gravy separately in the fridge.
