Description
A simple and comforting fried cabbage and onions recipe made in one pan with tender cabbage, caramelized onions, garlic, and seasonings for a flavorful side dish or light meal.
Ingredients
- 1 medium head cabbage (about 900 g), chopped
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil or butter
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika (optional)
- 1 tablespoon vinegar (optional)
Instructions
- Heat the olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add the sliced onion and cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft and lightly golden.
- Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
- Add the chopped cabbage and stir well to coat it evenly with the oil and mix with the onions.
- Season with salt, black pepper, and paprika if using.
- Cook for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender and slightly browned.
- Add the vinegar, if using, and stir well.
- Serve warm as a side dish or light main meal.
Notes
- Use olive oil for a fully plant-based version.
- Do not overcrowd the pan to help the cabbage brown instead of steam.
- Cook the onions a little longer for deeper caramelized flavor.
- Add chili flakes, carrots, or bell peppers for variation.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Reheat in a skillet over medium heat or in the microwave, adding a little oil or water if needed.
