Description

A simple and comforting fried cabbage and onions recipe made in one pan with tender cabbage, caramelized onions, garlic, and seasonings for a flavorful side dish or light meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 medium head cabbage (about 900 g), chopped
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon vinegar (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the sliced onion and cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft and lightly golden.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  4. Add the chopped cabbage and stir well to coat it evenly with the oil and mix with the onions.
  5. Season with salt, black pepper, and paprika if using.
  6. Cook for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender and slightly browned.
  7. Add the vinegar, if using, and stir well.
  8. Serve warm as a side dish or light main meal.

Notes

  • Use olive oil for a fully plant-based version.
  • Do not overcrowd the pan to help the cabbage brown instead of steam.
  • Cook the onions a little longer for deeper caramelized flavor.
  • Add chili flakes, carrots, or bell peppers for variation.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat in a skillet over medium heat or in the microwave, adding a little oil or water if needed.
