Description
A creamy and comforting green bean casserole made with tender green beans, a homemade mushroom-Parmesan sauce, and topped with crispy French fried onions.
Ingredients
- 1 pound frozen green beans
- ½ cup diced onion
- 1 tablespoon minced garlic
- 1 cup finely diced button mushrooms
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2½ cups half and half
- 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 2 cups French fried onions
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F and lightly grease a 2-quart baking dish.
- Steam the frozen green beans according to the package instructions, drain, and set aside.
- In a skillet over medium heat, sauté mushrooms, onion, and garlic until tender, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
- In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1–2 minutes until it forms a light roux.
- Slowly whisk in the half and half, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens, about 3 minutes.
- Remove from heat and stir in the Parmesan cheese, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper.
- In a large bowl, combine the green beans, sautéed vegetables, and creamy sauce.
- Transfer the mixture to the baking dish and top with French fried onions.
- Bake for 30 minutes, until hot and bubbly with a golden topping.
Notes
- Use fresh green beans for more texture.
- Canned green beans are softer but convenient.
- Add shredded cheddar for a cheesier version.
- Use cream instead of half and half for a richer sauce.
- Prepare in advance and add the onion topping just before baking.
