Description

A salty‑sweet crunchy toffee made by layering saltine crackers with a brown sugar‑butter caramel, topped with melted chocolate and optional nuts.

Ingredients

  • 40 saltine crackers (enough to line a 9×13″ pan in single layer)
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 cups semisweet or milk chocolate chips
  • ¾ cup chopped pecans (optional)
  • Kosher or sea salt, for sprinkling (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 °F (175 °C). Line a 9×13″ jelly‑roll pan with foil or parchment and spray with nonstick spray.
  2. Arrange the saltine crackers in a single, tight layer to fully cover the bottom of the pan.
  3. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and stir in the brown sugar. Bring to a full boil.
  4. Once boiling, continue to boil for about 3 minutes, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and deepens in color.
  5. Immediately remove from heat and pour the hot caramel evenly over the crackers; spread with a spatula.
  6. Bake in the oven for 5–8 minutes, until caramel is bubbly and bubbling across the surface of the crackers.
  7. Remove the pan from the oven and immediately sprinkle with chocolate chips. Let sit 1–2 minutes or return to the oven (turned off) for about 1 minute to soften chips, then spread into an even layer.
  8. If using nuts and/or salt, sprinkle them on top while the chocolate is still warm.
  9. Allow to cool at room temperature, then transfer to the fridge to set fully (about 30–60 minutes).
  10. Once set, break or cut into pieces and serve or store in an airtight container.

Notes

  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks or in the fridge.
  • Freeze for up to 3 months; thaw to room temp before serving.
  • Use parchment or foil to make removal and cleanup easier.
  • Ensure crackers are lined tightly for even coating.
  • Variations: use dark chocolate, white chocolate, butterscotch chips, pretzel crisps, or sprinkle festive sprinkles.
