Description

A hearty and comforting Irish-inspired skillet meal made with flavorful ground beef, tender cabbage, and simple seasonings, ready in just 30 minutes for an easy weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small head green cabbage, chopped (about 6 cups)
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 medium carrots, sliced (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook for 3 to 4 minutes until softened. Stir in the garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  2. Add the ground beef to the skillet. Break it up with a spoon and cook for 5 to 7 minutes until browned and fully cooked. Drain excess grease if necessary.
  3. Stir in the sliced carrots (if using) and chopped cabbage.
  4. Pour in the beef broth and add the salt, black pepper, dried thyme, and Worcestershire sauce.
  5. Cover and simmer for 10 to 12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender.
  6. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Remove from heat and serve warm.

Notes

  • For a lighter option, substitute ground turkey for ground beef.
  • Add diced potatoes for a heartier dish; increase cooking time and broth as needed.
  • A splash of apple cider vinegar can add brightness and depth.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • Freeze for up to 2 months and thaw overnight before reheating.
