Description

A warm and comforting Slow Cooker French Toast Casserole made with custardy French bread, cinnamon, and vanilla, slow-cooked to perfection with a soft center and lightly golden edges.

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf French bread (about 16 ounces), cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • Optional: 1/4 cup powdered sugar for dusting
  • Optional: 1/2 cup maple syrup for serving

Instructions

  1. Lightly grease the inside of the slow cooker with butter or nonstick spray. Spread the cubed French bread evenly inside.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and melted butter until well combined.
  3. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes, ensuring all pieces are coated. Gently press the bread down to help it absorb the liquid.
  4. Cover and cook on low for 3 to 4 hours or on high for 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours, until the center is set and the edges are lightly golden. Check doneness by inserting a knife into the center; if it comes out mostly clean, it is ready.
  5. Let cool slightly before serving. Dust with powdered sugar and drizzle with maple syrup if desired.

Notes

  • Assemble the casserole the night before and refrigerate for an easy morning breakfast.
  • Slightly stale French bread works best for absorbing the custard.
  • Add 1 cup fresh berries for a fruity variation.
  • Sprinkle chopped pecans or walnuts on top for added crunch.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Freeze individual portions for up to 2 months and thaw overnight before reheating.
