Description
A rich and comforting creamy green bean casserole made with tender green beans, a smooth savory sauce, and a crispy golden topping.
Ingredients
- 500 g fresh green beans, trimmed
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 cup milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup fried onions (store-bought or homemade)
- 1/2 cup grated cheddar cheese (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Bring a pot of salted water to a boil and cook the green beans for 5–6 minutes until slightly tender. Drain and set aside.
- In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and stir in the flour. Cook for about 1 minute.
- Slowly add the milk and cream, stirring continuously until the mixture thickens into a smooth sauce.
- Add garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper, and mix well.
- Combine the green beans with the sauce and transfer to a baking dish.
- Sprinkle fried onions on top and add grated cheese if using.
- Bake for 20–25 minutes until bubbly and golden on top.
Notes
- Do not overcook green beans before baking to keep a good texture.
- Add sautéed mushrooms for extra flavor.
- Use only milk instead of cream for a lighter version.
- Parmesan cheese can replace cheddar for a sharper taste.
